This history is commemorated by The Rufus Stone near The Old Sir Walter Tyrrell which is inscribed as follows on three sides: Here stood the Oak tree, on which an arrow, shot by Sir Walter Tyrrell at a stag, glanced, and struck King William The Second surnamed Rufus, on the breast, of which he instantly died, on the second day of August anno 1100.
King William The Second surnamed Rufus being slain as before related, was laid in a cart belonging to one Purkis, and drawn from hence to Winchester, and buried in the Cathedral Church of that city.
That the spot where an event so memorable might not hereafter be forgotten, the enclosed stone was set up by John Lord Delaware who had seen the tree growing in this place.
The house is heated by a wood burner in the winter and an array of solar panels in the summer. All waste wood was cut, dried and
is now stored for use in the wood burner.
Paper, plastic and cardboard build packaging waste was locally recycled, saving approx. 5 skips worth of refuse. 30 tonnes of brick rubble and concrete were crushed on site and used to form the foundations for the patios, paths and driveways.
The building was repointed in natural breathable lime a product from local company, Limestuff Limited. Every sash window in the building was replaced with an identical double glazed, timber window painted with a water based paint while cutting edge insulation keeps the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Underfloor heating is fitted throughout, powered by the wood burner or solar panels.
Rainwater is collected, filtered and stored in a large tank under the driveway, then pumped back into a tank in the loft where it feeds the 5 toilets, garden taps and washing machines. An air handling unit, rather than conventional extractor fans, removes warm damp air from the bathrooms, kitchens and utility room. This warm air is then used to heat fresh incoming air so the rooms stay warm and well ventilated.
